Nymphs Trout

Nymphs Trout

The key to catching fish is fly selection! With out the right fly you won’t catch fish no matter how hard or long you try that’s just the simple truth but I can help you with a few basic tips.

Even once you select the correct fly its still not a case of cast it out and catch fish, you also need to choose the correct size. Sometimes the fish will just seem to take anything that passes by and other times it’s almost like the fish doesn’t want to even look at your fly.

Even on the worst of days if the fly is the right type then you will catch fish but learning to select the fly is another thing.

There are four main types of flies to choose from.

1. Nymphs and buzzers.

2. Wet flies.

3. Dry flies.

and

4. Lures.

There are several things that need to be taken into account when selecting a fly such as water depth, water clarity, temperature, wind speed, sun light and time of year to name just a few.

- Water depth and clarity should help decide the size, weight and colour of the fly.

- Temperature and sun light should determine the type of fly and the depth of which it should be fished.

- Time of year is the most important factor as at different times of year different types of flies lay eggs, begin to hatch and grow into adult flies.

Natural fly imitations are all effective at different times of year but there are different species that hatch around the same time each year and excellent fishing can be had it you can match your imitation fly to the natural one just hatching. At different times of years there are different types of natural flies on which fish feed and if you match your imitation to the natural insect then you can have one of your best ever days fishing.

Lures are flies that don’t even look like any insect but are big and flashy to catch the fish’s attention and induce a take. Lures are best on really bright hot days where the fish will be holding deep in the water close to the bottom or at the start of winter and through out the winter months.

Dry fly fishing is considered the crème de la crème of fishing. Every angler knows that dry fly fishing if the “holy grail” of the sport of fishing. Not every one has the money to get lessons or go on a fly fishing course and even if they do every person can only take in so much information at the one time so that’s why I recommend an eBook or one you can buy in your local book shop as you can keep going back to it over and over again. An eBook is normally cheaper and always just as good if not better at times then a hard or paper back book. Also you can refer back to the eBook as often as you want unlike hiring an instructor for only an hour or two.

When any one asks what’s my secret to catching so many fish even on “bad days”? Or if I had to choose what is the most useful piece of my fishing kit what would it be? My answer always is “I owe my success to the eBook that thought me everything I know and if I had to start all over again in the morning the very first piece of fly fishing kit I would buy is a detailed eBook.”
